Greg Brown, left, with Byron Stuart at the legendary Byron’s Bar in Pomeroy, Iowa, after a show. Iowa’s leading muse, Greg Brown, put on his last big show at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City last weekend. He insists he is retired, done with the road, off the stage unless some local benefit draws in him. He’s 73. He would just as soon stay home and write songs, he told the Cedar Rapids Gazette. And he said this:
Greg Brown has been an Iowa treasure and his remorse over what we've lost in Iowa rings too true. We are approaching the one-year anniversary of my husband's death and one thing that has helped me with that is knowing Bob would agree with Greg and be SO sad...at least he doesn't have to see it.
This is outstanding column (of course) and yet such a sad bit of commentary.
