Little country towns like Melvin had its bullies. As the only boy in town, I learned to shed the rhetoric. Iowa needs to ignore the bullies. Rob Sand was assaulted by some last week at the State Fair. How dare he run against one of theirs, despite Sand’s opponent having more issues than being too moderate. Chris Jones is a do or die proposition for Iowa as far as a sustainable future for our children is concerned. Many Democrats remain silent. Will the bullies taunts develop into the violence they are advertising? I learned to fight in Melvin. And Voting Booths are sanctuary’s where for a minute, it’s just You and your Conscience deciding what you and your community’s Best Interests are.
Some wise man once said that it is difficult to get a person to support things that threaten their livelihood. That is true, because most Iowans who pay attention know that Big Ag is polluting our soil, our water, and air, but they continue to vote against their own health, just like so many Americans have been doing for decades. Why do the MAGAs say all Dems are socialists and communists? Because that is what they hear on Faux News etc. and DonOld repeats these childish schoolyard taunts ad nauseum. Do they know what these words mean? Highly doubtful........... I vote Dem and have since I first voted. Am I a socialist or commie rat? Not hardly, but I do believe that clean water, air you can breathe and access to health care are human rights. How cool to see Jack Ohman on this Substack! If you haven't seen his cartoons you are missing some really good stuff! But yes, the 19% must all work for the Egg Guy in NW IA near Sibley.

Well said Art. My Dad was raised a Republican in Mason City where I was born and raised. That was in the era of Congressman For Life HR Gross. In high school we'd go to the HR Gross campaign office and torment the staff. My friend Ray C.'s mother was the den mother of the Young Republicans. She later became a Democrat,kind of like my mom who was way too compassionate to vote Rs. These days my front yard sports a Chris Jones sign prominently displayed on the corner of N. Court St. and E. Lowe. My friend Ray C. said what is the deal, you said you would never have yard signs? Anyone who is in favor of clean water for Iowa deserves a spot in my yard! I am a monthly donor to Rob Sand and Josh Turek, and should be the same for the guy running against Jeff Shipley, our IA state rep. It is time we reclaimed the Iowa of Harkin and H. Hughes, but better!
Thank you, Art. So many of us are looking for some plain old fashioned common sense and decency. Republicans threw both of those concepts out the window when they tag teamed with trump. I honestly don’t think they have any capacity to retrieve much goodness at this point.
I'm really surprised that Iowans haven't spoken up against Trump's allegation tha immiragnts are polluting the blood of Americans. Remembering Henry Wallace should remind us about hybrids and cross breeding. Purebreds is so early 20th century because it's so stupid. In my family, our children who are also immigrant chlidren are amazingly smart and excel are docooring, lawyering and computer wizards.
When we raised cattle, we had black angus cows and a charolais bull--purbreds are so our of date!
It seems as though when we work together to improve the lives of ordinary citizens we are labeled communist or at least socialist. That has always been the gambit of the right so, of course, Trump is using this rhetoric and all his followers are falling in line.
I am a plain old Democrat who cares about this country and my fellow citizens, nothing more, nothing less. My parents taught me to be a kind caring human being. And I am 78 now!

Socialism could be defined by the preamble to the United States Constitution (which I remember being required to memorize as part of my stellar public school education):
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
Somehow the words "justice", "domestic tranquility", "general welfare" seem to have been conveniently forgotten by many in current leadership (and the moneyed powers behind them). "General welfare" is one of the founding principles of this nation. Call it socialism if you will; I call it living up to the best this country can be. Thanks again Art Cullen.

Why are we in a war we cannot afford or win? Why are we still experiencing $4 a gallon gas? Why aren't we talking about solutions to the social security crisis and lack of affordable health care?
